Description
Nora Kincaid schedules witness interviews before lunch. By afternoon, perimenopause can steal a perfectly good noun halfway through a question. Years with the New Hampshire State Police taught her to write things down. So when Céleste Ouellette climbs the stairs above a Berlin hardware store to ask Nora to find her brother, Nora opens a file.
Danny worked odd jobs in the North Country woods. He knew where the old survey pins were and which families had cut timber on either side of them. Now his truck sits empty off Route 110. At the county registry, a handwritten correction gives one family six extra acres. The sleeve that should hold the survey is empty.
Defense attorney Graham Dubois knows the family. He’s one of them. He also knows Nora well enough to sit down across from her at breakfast without waiting for an invitation. She might even have been glad to see him, if he hadn’t mentioned the size of the parcel before she told him.
Then a brick comes through Nora’s office window. Somebody knows exactly where to find her. She still doesn’t know where to find Danny.
Nora Kincaid’s story runs through Androscoggin After Dark. Anyone who thought she’d stay a supporting character should have known better. Now she has a series of her own. Of the Woods opens The Peri Files with a North Country mystery and a slow-burning attraction. Meeting Nora for the first time? Pull up a chair. She has a few questions.
